Anniversary Trip to Jensen Beach, FL

11/16/2022

Jensen Beach shores with rainbow over water
VIBE: Romantic, Sophisticated
4191 NE Ocean Blvd, Jensen Beach, FL 34957
Located near Hutchinson Island South, Jensen Beach Park on the shore of Martin and St. Lucie County, offers stunning sunrises and blue water. This relaxing paradise oceanfront park is open from 7am to 8pm. Updated November 16, 2022: It was not affected by recent hurricanes.
We chose to spend our anniversary here on the Treasure Coast. We have been married for 31 years! While you can't drive right onto this beach, there is lots of parking in the large parking lot and it's a very short walk to the ocean. Dogs are allowed on this beach but our greyhound Fancy Pants did not join us on this trip: humans only. Jensen Beach Park has a lot to offer in terms of relaxation and beauty, although swimming here can be a challenge. We consider it to be mostly a beach for walking and wading. Read on to find out why.
Jensen Beach Sand

The sand here is a light, cocoa color and is very deep. It contains quite a bit of shells. It's a little hard to walk on, so if you want to stroll for any distance, stay closer to the water where it is flatter. Unless there are huge waves crashing in which happens after they hit the sandbar. This beach drops off steeply into the ocean but we had no problem anchoring our umbrella. There were people surf fishing with their poles in the sand. Thank goodness for the shower station nearby so that we could wash the sand off before getting in our truck. Swim shoes might be good to use here because the sand is sticky. It you are looking for a white sand beach like Siesta Key or South Beach Miami, you may not like this brown sand. In our opinion, it is still beautiful.
Jensen Beach Water

The water was very refreshing. It was a little cooler in October than expected, but it was 95 degrees outside so it was still great. The ocean water is a beautiful turquoise color, similar to Siesta Key, Miami Beach and Sand Key Park. It was a little murky when we visited. We get a little nervous when we can't see our feet so we stayed close to the shore. We jumped a few waves then relaxed underneath our umbrella.
Jensen Beach Parking and Amenities

We parked our truck in the large, free parking lot for few hours. There is a nice spot to grab food and drinks (alcohol too) at Jensen Beach Park called the Sand Dune Café. It is open (at time of publishing) from 7:30 am to 4 pm, Thursday through Sunday. The restaurant was renovated in 2022 and offers omelets, sandwiches and salads. Check out their taco salad bowl and fresh beignets. The restrooms are clean, there are showers and you can rent chairs and umbrellas. We pack everything we need in the pickup truck so we don't rent chairs. Don't worry if you don't have a truck, Jensen Beach Park has everything you need for a wonderful beach day.

Jensen Beach Activities

Sunning is the main activity on Jensen Beach
There's just a whole lot of relaxing going on here! Aside from the surfers, it is mostly folks getting sun or surf fishing. The surfers are out early at sunrise and stay until the sun goes down because it is a prime location to catch a wave. The water is calm but occasional huge waves appear, so be careful. If you want to explore the area, the Causeway Park is beautiful for fishing, watching boats on the Indian River and spectacular sunsets. Check out the Jensen Beach webcam here.
Look Out! This Could Happen...
Waves in Atlantic shores of Jensen Beach, FL
Jensen Beach waves
Due to erosion from storms, this beach is quite steep with a substantial drop off into the ocean. The waves can come out of nowhere and be huge so swim with caution! Don't be fooled by the calm-looking ocean. We were knocked over and had skinned knees from 6 foot waves! This is why surfers gather all day long: the surfing is awesome. There have also been shark sightings here but this is the Atlantic ocean, so it's to be expected. Swimming at low tide and near a lifeguard station is always recommended.
Trucks At This Beach
Blue Toyota Tacoma pickup truck in beach parking lot
Wow! In the free parking lot we found this great looking Toyota Tacoma TRD. Beautiful Voodoo Blue color, raised air intake snorkel and loaded with a bunch of the TRD off road options. This pickup truck looked ready to take on any action and we were impressed.
What We Really Think About Jensen Beach
Sunrise over Atlantic Ocean at Jensen Beach FL

The water is so beautiful and blue at Jensen Beach but swimming safely can be a challenge, especially for kids. We stayed one night at the Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa and had a wonderful time. We experienced an incredible sunrise and rainbow after the rain. The hotel staff valet-parked our truck (you can't park overnight at beach parks). We spent a lot of time on the oceanfront hotel balcony. It's always a treat to have an ocean view, but we got a few mosquito bites! There was bug spray provided by the hotel so it appears mosquitos can sometimes be a problem in this area. We haven't experienced insect bites at the Daytona area beaches. If you visit Jensen beach, we suggest you bring some insect spray with you! Otherwise, enjoy everything this gorgeous Atlantic Ocean beach has to offer.
